Peter Murphy

Project Manager
Columboola Chemical Munitions Destruction Project
B. App. Sc. (Hons.)

Peter has worked as an environmental scientist, engineer and project manager for over 20 years after graduating from UNE-NR with a Bachelor of Applied Science - Honours in 1991. Since 1998 he has worked largely in the Defence and First Response sectors in various system design, implementation and project management roles. Peter’s primary areas of interest are in the development and supply of Chemical and Oil Pollution control technologies and Chemical Biological, Nuclear and Radiological (CBRN) contamination management solutions.

In 1999, as Managing Director of OPEC Systems, was responsible for the delivery of a number of comprehensive CBRN decontamination systems for the Australian Defence Department’s Incident Response Regiment under Project Bloodhound - part of the Sydney 2000 Olympics preparedness program.

Following the 9/11 terrorism incident in New York, Peter became increasingly involved in the CBRN arena and through 2003 and 2004, under a federal program managed by the Attorney General’s Department, he designed and delivered CBRN decontamination and mass casualty management systems to various Fire Brigades and Health Services throughout all Australian States and Territories. He has since built a number of other specialty decontamination and portable field hospital systems for the Australian Government and he supplies the bulk of the CBRN ensembles used by the Australian Army – the MkIVA.

In 2007 Peter established OPEC Technical Services (OTS), a specialised engineering company focussing on the design, construction, testing, maintenance and decommissioning of bulk fuel and chemical management systems. OTS operates offices in Queensland, Victoria and NSW and services clients throughout Australia.

In 2008, Peter developed a suite of decontamination and vapour containment shelters for the Defence Marangaroo Munitions Destruction Project which was controlled by Milsearch on behalf of Defence. These technologies were utilised by Milsearch and this project formed the beginning of a successful alliance between Milsearch and OPEC in the provision of specialised services in relation to chemical munitions destruction.

Since late 2009 Peter has worked with Milsearch in the role of Project Manager for the complex and demanding Defence Columboola Mustard Munitions Destruction Project operating in central south Queensland. The project is responsible for the de-militarisation of a WWII US Army CW ammunition depot. Milsearch is engaged as the prime contractor in managing the investigation of the site and the destruction of old chemical weapons encountered.
